What This Calculator Does
Junior cricket doesn’t sort players by school year or birth year — every board freezes each player’s age on a single cut-off date and uses that one number for the entire season, however early or late their birthday falls afterward. This tool applies the cut-off date and age-band ladder for ECB, Cricket Australia or BCCI cricket (or a custom date for any other league), and tells you exactly which “Under” age group a player is eligible for.

Worked Example
A player born 15 September 2013, checked against a 1 September 2026 cut-off, is 12 years and 11 months old on that date — their birthday hasn’t happened yet that season, so the younger age still counts. Under the ECB ladder that’s Under-13 (12 ≤ 13 − 1). Run the same date of birth against the BCCI or Cricket Australia cut-off and the same player comes out as Under-14 under both — same child, same day, two different band names, because each board’s ladder is numbered differently.

What is the cut-off date for junior cricket age groups? +
It depends on the board. England and Wales (ECB) and India (BCCI) both use 1 September; Cricket Australia uses 31 August. A player's age on that single date — not their age at any other point in the season — decides which "Under" age group they play in for the whole season.
How is a player's "cricket age" actually calculated? +
As their age in whole years on the cut-off date, using the same counting convention as a birthday: if the cut-off date falls on or after their birthday that year, the new age counts; if it falls before, the previous age still counts. A player who turns 12 the day after the cut-off is treated as 11 for that entire season.
Why do England's age bands (Under 9, 11, 13, 15) skip even numbers while Australia's (Under 10, 12, 14, 16) skip odd ones? +
Historical convention rather than any rule of the game — each board built its own two-year-wide ladder independently, offset by one year from the other. A child in England's Under-11 band and a child in Australia's Under-12 band can be exactly the same age.
Can a player be allowed to play in a different age group than their cut-off date says? +
Many leagues allow a player to apply for dispensation to play up an age group, and some allow playing down for players close to the cut-off or new to the game — but this is a club or association decision on a case-by-case basis, not an automatic entitlement, and policy varies significantly between leagues.
What is age fraud in junior cricket, and how is it checked? +
Age fraud means competing in a younger age group than a player's real age, usually through falsified birth documents. Boards such as the BCCI combine document checks with skeletal-maturity ("bone age") testing, most commonly the TW3 method, though bone testing has a known margin of error and has been reformed more than once as a result.
